Dev Deepawali is the festival of lights and said to be the Deepawali of Gods, as this festival falls on full moon day which is Kartik Poornima of Hindu month. It is going to be celebrated on 7th Nov, 2022 in Varanasi.
Wait! Don’t related Dev Deepawali with Diwali, though both are festival of Diya/lights but are completely different in rituals. It usually takes place after fifteen days of Diwali every year. Dev Deepawali or Dev Diwali, marks Lord Shiva’s victory over demon Tripurasur and comes after 15 days of Diwali. Consequently, the festival is also known by the name of Tripurotsav and is celebrated on the day of Kartik-Purnima. On this day, all the step ladders of ghats are lit with earthen lamps (diyas) in tribute to God, Goddess and Ganga River.
On this auspicious day, a large number of devotees come together to take a dip in the holy Ganges. They pray to goddess Ganga and offer flowers and light clay lamps or diyas in the evening. Lights & Diyas used to be offered to Maa Ganga is called Deepdaan. As soon as the sun set starts on that day, every single step of the staircases of 84 Ganga Ghats sparkle with millions of diyas, which look absolutely stunning.
During this utopia, every element of the city comes alive with bright colours, flowers & shining diyas. The city seems that stars have fallen down on the Earth to brand the city all the more stunning. It is said that on the day of Dev Deepawali, all the Gods & Divine spirits descend to Varanasi to bathe in the Ganga River, a fact that styles this festival immensely popular.
Apart from having a religious touch to it, martyrs are also remembered at the ghats. This is done by praying to Ganga Mata and by offering an aarti to her. This is organized by Ganga Seva Nidhi when wreaths are placed at Amar Jawan Jyoti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and also at the adjoining Rajendra Prasad Ghat by police officials, and also the members of the three-armed forces. To mark this event, patriotic songs are also sung.
If you wish to partake and experience the magic of Dev Diwali Varanasi, you must start planning months before or shall take help of Team from Hotel Kings Banaras who offers accommodation and sightseeing services. This festival is a major draw and gets packed with travellers and devotees.
